Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy asks a simple, surprisingly powerful question: what is happening for you right now, in this moment, as we talk?

What Gestalt Therapy Is

Gestalt therapy grew out of the humanistic tradition in the mid-twentieth century. Its focus is awareness in the present moment: what you are feeling, sensing, and doing as it happens, rather than only talking about the past or theorizing about why.

The word gestalt refers to a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. In therapy, that means paying attention to the whole of you, including your body, your emotions, and the way you relate in the room.

Why It Fits the Way I Work

My practice is named Present Life Counseling for a reason. So much of what I care about is helping people come back to the present, out of the linear thinking and constant forecasting that cause so much suffering.

Gestalt ideas show up in small ways. I might notice that your voice softens when you mention someone, and ask about it. We might try a simple experiment, like speaking a sentence you have been holding back, to see what happens when you say it out loud.

Is It Right for You?

Gestalt work suits people who are ready to be curious about their own experience as it unfolds. It is collaborative, and you are always free to say no to any experiment.
