Therapeutic Presence: Cultivating the Therapist's Most Essential Clinical Skill
A three-hour live, experiential workshop for clinicians.
Why this workshop
Presence over performance.

We spend years learning theories, interventions, assessments, treatment planning, and clinical techniques. But underneath all of them is something more fundamental: the therapist's capacity to be fully present.
Therapeutic presence is more than listening carefully or practicing mindfulness. It is the ability to bring our whole selves into the therapeutic encounter, to remain grounded, attuned, curious, and emotionally available while staying connected to ourselves.
This will not be three hours of passive lecture. The workshop combines research, reflection, discussion, therapist self-assessment, and experiential practice.
There is nothing you need to perfect. Presence is not another clinical technique to master. It is a capacity we continue cultivating throughout our lives as therapists.
What we explore
Three hours, spent on what sits underneath the techniques.
- What therapeutic presence actually is, and what the research says about its role
- The difference between presence and performance in the therapy room
- Barriers to presence: anxiety, overthinking, fixing, urgency, distraction, and therapist self-doubt
- How our own nervous systems influence the therapeutic relationship
- Attunement, embodiment, and the therapeutic use of self
- How diagnostic thinking can interfere with seeing the whole person
- Staying present with complexity, uncertainty, and discomfort
- Practical ways to cultivate presence before, during, and between sessions
Learning objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define therapeutic presence and describe its role in effective psychotherapy.
- Recognize barriers that interfere with therapeutic presence in clinical practice.
- Practice techniques that enhance therapist presence and attunement.
- Apply presence-based principles ethically within the therapeutic relationship.
Who it is for
Clinicians who want the relational dimension of the work to deepen.
This workshop is for counselors, therapists, social workers, and other mental health professionals who want to deepen the relational and experiential dimensions of their clinical work.
It may be especially meaningful for clinicians who have found themselves wondering:
“Am I doing enough? What intervention should I use next? Do I need to fix this? What if I don't know what to say?”
Presence over performance.
